I think that players are far better physically conditioned than in yesteryear. Having watched top level football in the UK for many years It is my opinion that the average technical standard of the players we produce is superior to that of the past.

I think shirt numbers used to be determined by what position they were playing that game as opposed to players having a choice. I've seen some videos on youtube of Bobby in 12, Brooking in 7, Bonds in 2 and Hurst in 8 a few times too.

lol comma I'm sorrier than you that I'm "getting on a bit". Far from past it though and probably a similar age to many on here.
Actually speak to many people of my age and you will find there are no regrets as we tend to think we have seen the best of times. Lots of things have changed, some for the better but many for the worse.
Still enjoy my football but, in my opinion, it isn't as good. If I had to say why I would say because there is not as much action. The build up is far too slow nowadays.

Chances are comma that I have watched football in this country far longer than yourself.
I do accept, to a degree, that the players, overall, have a greater technical ability than the players of yesteryear (certainly the further back you go) but that doesn't make them better footballers. The likes of Best, Bowles, Currie, Marsh, Brooking, Di Canio etc etc were technically brilliant anyway so they would thrive in whatever era they played but, as mentioned, the description of the modern footballer being more like an athlete is correct and their bodies would not have coped with the rigours of playing at the top level back then.
Clubs would go an entire season with just 16 players or so. The modern footballer could just not do it. Proof of why it is wrong to compare eras.

Looking at that he scored a lot of volies in very shitty muddy conditions, very impressive.
Always surprises me how crap the pitches were when I see these old videos. Crazy thing is I went to those games and do not remember that at all. Penalty areas were a mud field by the end of the season.

I think we will have to respectfully disagree on this one comma.
As I say, in my opinion, you shouldn't compare players/standards of today v previous years (going back too far anyway)....everything's relative.
Players around in the 90's would have included the likes of Scholes, Shearer, Beckham, Rio, Bergkamp etc

I don't think that I'm unique in thinking the PL has a higher standard than the old first division. In fact I think that the PL now has a higher standard than twenty years ago.

For a start you cannot/should not compare players of today against those of another era. Different playing surfaces etc etc.

What people seem not to take on board is that the standard in the PL is a step change higher than the old first division back in the sixties. Aside from the likes of Moore, Hurst Peters the rest of our usual elevens back then would be struggle to hold their own in any of today's lower order PL teams.
